[PRESS RELEASE] POLARIS 5 MAIN EVENTS ANNOUNCED

WORLD-LEADING PROFESSIONAL JIU JITSU EVENT POLARIS HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THE TOP END OF THE FIGHT CARD FOR POLARIS 5, WHICH TAKES PLACE AT THE INDIGO AT THE 02, IN GREENWICH, LONDON, ON SATURDAY AUGUST 19TH.

Headlining the evening will be Dillon Danis, looking to avenge his only submission loss at black belt as he takes on Garry “The Lion Killer” Tonon.

Jake Shields, a veteran MMA fighter emerging as a dominant force in the professional submission grappling circuit, pits his American Jiu Jitsu against Dan ‘the Raspberry Ape’ Strauss, one of the biggest characters in British jiu jitsu, and a national and European champion.

Polaris welcomes UFC legend Brad ‘One Punch’ Pickett to its stage as he takes on Polaris veteran and former UFC fighter Phil Harris.

These are all no-gi, 15-minute bouts to be contested under the Polaris rules, which encourage constant action over the duration of the bout.

02 Priority customers in the UK will receive an invitation to buy tickets early on Wednesday May 17th.

More details will be released in coming weeks. The rest of the Polaris 5 Card will feature some of the best grapplers and jiu jitsu experts from Europe and the world. There will be a preliminary card before the main card. News on how to watch the broadcast of both the preliminary card and the main card will be released soon.

Garry Tonon has competed numerous times on the Polaris stage, showcasing his incredible skillset and the unique style that has earned him titles in many other promotions including the IBJJF, EBI (Eddie Bravo Invitational) and many more. In his last two matches, Garry fought Rousimar Palhares in an electrifying bout that ended as a draw. He then fought UFC veteran Gilbert Burns, who he defeated via heelhook. Garry is a member of the Danaher Death Squad, the team that trains under the tutelage of John Danaher at the Renzo Gracie Academy in New York.

Dillon Danis received his black belt from Marcelo Garcia. He is an IBJJF World Champion, and in his last Polaris appearance, submitted the much larger Jackson Sousa by heel hook. Danis is also known for being part of Conor Mcgregor’s training team, working on the UFC Champion’s grappling both in New York and at the Straight Blast Gym in Ireland.

Jake Shields is a veteran of many promotions including the UFC, where he was on a 16-fight win streak until he met Georges St Pierre. His style of American Jiu Jitsu is a hybrid of wrestling and BJJ. He recently beat Dillon Danis in a match at Submission Underground. Jake’s close training partners include the Diaz Brothers, Nick and Nate Diaz, who are both also noted for their high level jiu jitsu skills.

Dan Strauss, better known as the Raspberry Ape, is a British BJJ black belt under Mauricio Gomes and Roger Gracie. A multiple time British and European champion, Dan has competed around the world including on EBI (Eddie Bravo Invitational).

Brad Pickett has been one of the UFC’s most recognisable faces for years, having fought high profile matches with Urijah Faber, Demetrius Johnson, Renan Barao, and more. Recently retired from MMA, Brad now looks to test himself on the professional grappling circuit.

Phil Harris is a British MMA veteran and former UFC fighter who has competed successfully on Polaris, having defeated Spencer Hewitt by heel hook submission.
