Scramblog IBJJF Legal Ranked Rashguards – All you Need to…
For decades, the protocols set forth by the IBJJF have been the basic measuring stick of ranking in jiujitsu. Even with the modern explosion in popularity of no-gi grappling, where a belt is not even worn, most schools still stick to the traditional jiujitsu ranking system of white, blue, purple, brown and black belts (for adults.)
When a belt is not present, the rashguard is used to denote the rank. The IBJJF introduced this when they introduced their uniform requirements for nogi competition (such as IBJJF No Gi Worlds, No Gi Pans and No Gi Euros.) And while the grappling world searches for its own ranking system independent from the IBJJF, for now, it still follows suit.
According to the IBJJF no gi uniform rules:
Both genders must wear a shirt of elastic material (skin tight) long enough to cover the torso all the way to the waistband of the shorts, colored black, white, or black and white, and with at least 10% of the rank color(belt) to which the athlete belongs. Shirts 100% the color of the athlete’s rank (belt) are also permitted.
Note: For black belts a small red area will be tolerated, but must not decharacterize the athlete’s rank color.
Board shorts colored black, white, black and white, and/or the color of the rank (belt) to which the athlete belongs, without pockets or with the pockets stitched completely shut, without buttons, exposed drawstrings, zippers or any form of plastic or metal that could present a risk to the opponent, long enough to cover at least halfway down the thigh, and no longer than the knee.
Also permitted are compression shorts made of elastic material (skin tight) worn beneath the shorts, in the colors black, white, black and white, and/or the color of the rank (belt) to which the athlete belongs.
The IBJJF also goes as far as to specify the exact pantones or print colours needed in the rash guards, which is what Scramble have used in their production. Strangely, the purple that the IBJJF specified photographs quite blue, but in hand, it is definitely purple.
In our latest ranked rashguards, we use the bars to denote the rank – which means the white ranked rashguard actually has a black body (and white bars) and the black ranked rashguard has a white body with black bars (plus, a cool red Scramble hit.)
